A key aspect that will be discussed is the ability for multiple analytical representations of any given design to be created and linked – facilitating design coordination where required – but also giving flexibility and customization as is essential in complex design workflows.
The BHoM has also been developed from the ground up with mass participation and diverse co-authorship in mind. This way of working both in tool creation and use enables powerful transdisciplinary performance-based design to be achieved at scale.
Examples of applications across structural analysis, life cycle assessment analysis and environmental design will be shown.
Dr. Al Fisher – Technical Director and Head of Computational Development at Buro Happold
Al Fisher leads Computational Development for Buro Happold globally. His background is in structural design computation with a masters and PhD in Civil and Architectural Engineering from the University of Bath, joining Buro Happold in 2007. Since then he has focused on performance driven design and optimization, applying these principles to projects such as the Louvre Abu Dhabi and the London Olympic Stadium Transformation.

The vision of the Cluster of Excellence Integrative Computational Design and Construction for Architecture (IntCDC) at the University of Stuttgart is to harness the full potential of digital technologies in order to rethink design, fabrication and construction based on integration and interdisciplinarity, with the goal of enabling game-changing innovation in the building sector as it can only occur through highly integrative fundamental research in an interdisciplinary, large-scale research undertaking.
The cluster aims to lay the methodological foundations for a profound rethinking of the design and building process and related building systems by adopting an integrative computational approach based on interdisciplinary research encompassing architecture, structural engineering, building physics, engineering geodesy, manufacturing and system engineering, computer science and robotics, social sciences and humanities. It aims to bundle the internationally recognised competencies in these fields of the University of Stuttgart and the Max Planck Institute for Intelligent Systems to accomplish its research mission.
IntCDC is home to more than 120 researchers from the University of Stuttgart and the Max-Planck-Institute of Intelligent Systems and has been funded by the German Research Foundation DFG since 2019.
