Advancements in technology have enabled human physiology and health to be assessed in places and ways that were not previously possible. This presentation provides an overview of the smart-shirt technology used during bed rest and spaceflight investigations both on the ground and aboard the International Space Station. Techniques to obtain high-fidelity, un-intrusive physiological measurements of ambulatory individuals and the application of machine learning to predict oxygen uptake from the wearable sensor data will be discussed. The utilization of near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) on the lower limb for measuring differences between bone and muscle hemodynamics before and after periods of bed rest during ambulation and posture transitions will also be introduced.

Carmelo Mastrandrea completed his medical training at Imperial College, London, in 2011. He practiced as a physician in the UK before returning to academic studies, completing his Master’s degree in Space Physiology and Health at King’s College London in 2016. Carmelo was awarded his Ph.D. in 2019 from the Université Jean Monnet, France, where his work focused on the role of bone marrow adipose tissue in unloaded mouse models. He is now affiliated with the Schlegel-UW Research Institute for Aging and the University of Waterloo, Canada, where his research interests include physiological adaptations to spaceflight and long-duration bed rest. Carmelo works closely with Prof. Richard Hughson’s group and uses different experimental techniques to investigate cardiovascular and musculoskeletal physiology.
